The Black Coral used for jewelry is the calcified skeletons of tiny polyps which are in cavities secreting a calcite substance through their bases. Black Coral grows to a height of ten feet. Unworked coral is dull; when polished it has a vitreous luster. It is sensitive to heat, acids, and hot solutions. Coral is found at depths from 10-1020 feet. However the best coral is found at depths from 75 feet down. The Coral is worked with saws, drills, files, knives, and other lapidary equipment. Only the very best quality Coral is used in the manufacturing of our unique pieces. |
